Catherine Bell, who plays Cassie, a classy stranger, comes through with another delightful performance in The Good Witch. This rather light story is surprisingly entertaining, even though for the most part it's rather predictable. The setting is a cozy little town filled with folks who are rather set in their ways. An old weathered mansion, called the Grey House, attracts the curiosity of kids and others who believe it is haunted. Our of nowhere, Cassie shows up in the Grey House. After a rather abrupt introduction, the police chief and his children are charmed by Cassie and become friends. This irritates most of the other townspeople especially when this magical woman opens a curiosity shop filled with candles, oils, and enticing scents. Even though this story doesn't quite equal many of the other Hallmark Channel original movies that are simply outstanding, we congratulate our friends at Hallmark for continuing to create original movie for families. One slight surprise in this one, that may or may not deserve explanation or comment, is the jar of aphrodisiac that Cassie sells to a middle age woman who browses in her "Bell, Book and Candle" shop, with a money back guarantee if it doesn't work. Cassie is sure it will because she invented it herself. Although the subject of her personal confidence in her creation isn't pursued in the story, we wish this beautifully charming single woman hadn't made such a point about the success of her magical potion.
