Hayley Mills is adorable and believable in her dual role as twins separated at birth by their divorced parents in the 1961 Disney comedy classic The Parent Trap. When outgoing Susan Evers and shy, sophisticated, Sharon McKendrick become friends after a series of mishaps at a summer camp for girls, they soon discover that they are really identical twin sisters. Determined that they will never be divided again, they devise a scheme to reunite their parents by switching places. Maureen O’Hara is very entertaining as the slightly sarcastic and gorgeous mother and Brian Keith is perfect as the father whose peaceful ranch existence and upcoming nuptials to a much younger woman become totally disrupted. The Parent Trap also has a superb supporting cast, which includes Una Merkel as the feisty ranch housekeeper Verbena, Crahan Denton as the laid-back ranch hand Hecky, Charlie Ruggles as the endearing and helpful grandfather, and Leo G. Carroll as the hilarious Reverend Dr. Mosby. Beautiful Joanna Barnes also puts in a deliciously malevolent performance as the wicked stepmother to be. Although the special effects of the 1960s are not what they are today, Disney still does a convincing job of turning Hayley Mills into the plotting twin sisters. This film is very engaging, fun and fast-paced. Audiences of all ages will enjoy it.
