Candles on Bay Street is a touching film about the way love can transform itself over the years and still be as powerful—if not more powerful—than it ever was. Sam and Lydia are a happily married couple working as veterinarians in a small town in northern Maine. Preparing to move into a brand new house and with tentative talk of starting a family of their own, things seem to be coming along well for them—until a visitor from Sam’s past makes an unexpected appearance. Dee Dee, played wonderfully by Alicia Silverstone, is a single-mother making her return to her small town after her abrupt departure several years before. The entire town is thrown off by her startling return, much as they would be the return of a prodigal daughter. No one, however, is more taken off-guard than Sam, who had loved Dee Dee best, and grew up in the house next door to her. Preparing to give Dee Dee his high school ring the night of their graduation, he was torn apart by her sudden abandonment and marriage to a man that nobody felt was right for her. Things begin a bit awkwardly between Dee Dee, her son Trooper, and Sam and Lydia. At first Lydia is suspicious of this woman from Sam’s past who has suddenly come back into their lives—but even she begins to warm up to Dee Dee’s charm and vivacity. Slowly Dee Dee and Trooper begin to integrate themselves back into the fibers of this small-knit community with their particular brand of happiness and love, changing everyone’s lives forever. One of the great things about this film is that the actor’s portrayals are so genuine that it is difficult not to be drawn into the lives and hearts of these characters. There are several tear-jerking moments, and even those who are not the type to cry in movies will find themselves sincerely touched by the tender message this film has to offer. Candles on Bay Street is a wonderful film about love lost and found again. It explores the ways in which we are never really separated from those we are closest too, even after long distances or periods of time have separated us. It is also about the importance of forgiveness. We thank Hallmark Hall of Fame for bringing us yet another movie that, if we take the message to heart, can make us a better person just for watching it.
